4-3 Cover 1
Man coverage with a single free safety over the top and a robber underneath.
Concept: Corners and backers play man while the free safety plays center field and a backer robs crossers.
Grows with your players
Same play, more layers as they age up — teach it once and build on it every season for a consistent program.
- 6UIntroduce: Line up right and own your gap — win with alignment, pad level, and pursuit to the ball.
- 8UAttack blocks: Add get-off and block destruction so the front controls the line of scrimmage.
- 10UAdd coverage: Teach the coverage drops behind the front and read run vs. pass.
- 12UFull call: Combine front, pressure, and coverage — and disguise it pre-snap.
Every position's job
1-technique, rush the weak A-gap.
3-technique, rush the strong B-gap.
Man the back out of the backfield, or robber underneath.
Man the tight end or the second back.
Rob crossers underneath or man a back.
Man the tight end or slot with inside leverage.
Play deep-middle center field as the single-high player.
Man the strong receiver with inside leverage.
Man the weak receiver with inside leverage.
How to teach it
- 1Man across the board with one deep free safety, so man defenders use inside leverage toward help.
- 2A backer robs crossers underneath to help the man defenders on picks and crossers.
- 3The free safety stays centered over the top of every route.
Common mistakes to fix
- !Man defenders playing outside leverage and losing the post; fix by leveraging inside toward the free safety.
- !The robber getting too deep and not helping underneath; fix by reading the QB and jumping crossers.
