Goal Line 4-4
Short-yardage adjustment adding a fourth backer to load the box at the goal line.
Concept: An extra backer walks into the box and all defenders fire their gap low to stop the dive and sneak.
Grows with your players
Same play, more layers as they age up — teach it once and build on it every season for a consistent program.
- 12UIntroduce: Line up right and own your gap — win with alignment, pad level, and pursuit to the ball.
- 14UAttack blocks: Add get-off and block destruction so the front controls the line of scrimmage. Layer in the called blitz — one timed gap-shooter on the snap. Combine front, pressure, and coverage — and disguise it pre-snap.
Every position's job
Fire low into the A-gap, penetrate and stop the dive.
Fire low into the strong B-gap, penetrate and squeeze.
Attack the strong C-gap low, set a hard edge and spill.
Attack the weak C-gap low, set a hard edge and spill.
Fill the strong A/B gap over the top, meet the dive low.
Fill the strong-side gap or edge, plug downhill.
Fill the weak A/B gap over the top, plug downhill.
Walk into the box and fill the remaining gap or edge low.
Cover a receiver man or fill the alley on run.
How to teach it
- 1A fourth backer walks into the box and every defender fires his gap low to stop the dive and sneak.
- 2Get pads under the offensive line and create a wall at the goal line.
- 3The extra backer outnumbers the blockers so every gap is accounted for.
Common mistakes to fix
- !Defenders coming up high and getting driven back; fix by firing low with a flat back.
- !A gap left unaccounted with the extra backer; fix by confirming gap assignments pre-snap.
