Same play, more layers as they age up — teach it once and build on it every season for a consistent program.

  1. 6UIntroduce: Line up right and own your gap — win with alignment, pad level, and pursuit to the ball.
  2. 8UAttack blocks: Add get-off and block destruction so the front controls the line of scrimmage.
  3. 10UFull call: Combine front, pressure, and coverage — and disguise it pre-snap.

Every position's job

Align in a 3-technique on the guard's outside shoulder and control the strong B-gap.

DT (weak)

Align in a 3-technique and control the weak B-gap.

MLB (Mike)

Stack behind the strong A/B-gap area, read the guard/back, and fill the strong A-gap.

ILB (Will)

Stack behind the weak A/B-gap area, read your key, and fill the weak A-gap.

OLB (Sam)

Stack outside over the strong edge, key the tight end/edge, and set contain to the strong side.

OLB (backer, weak)

Stack over the weak edge, key the near back, and set weak-side contain.

CB (strong)

Cover the strong deep third/receiver and provide outside run support.

CB (weak)

Cover the weak deep third/receiver and support the run from outside-in.

FS

Play free safety over the top and be the extra run fitter/alley player.

How to teach it

  • 1Ends in 5-techniques, tackles in 3-techniques, backers stacked over gaps — walk each defender to his exact alignment.
  • 2Everyone reads their key first (linemen the man over, backers the guards/backs) before flowing.
  • 3Stay in your gap — no gap-jumping until the ball declares.

Common mistakes to fix

  • !Linebackers run to the ball and vacate their gap; fix by drilling read-step then fill in the assigned gap.
  • !Ends get reach-hooked and lose contain; fix by teaching them to keep outside leverage on the edge.
