44 Base Cover 3
Base 4-4 front paired with three-deep zone coverage for balanced run and pass defense.
Concept: Two corners and free safety split the deep third while four underneath defenders drop to curl-flat and hook zones.
Grows with your players
Same play, more layers as they age up — teach it once and build on it every season for a consistent program.
- 6UIntroduce: Line up right and own your gap — win with alignment, pad level, and pursuit to the ball.
- 8UAttack blocks: Add get-off and block destruction so the front controls the line of scrimmage.
- 10UAdd coverage: Teach the coverage drops behind the front and read run vs. pass.
- 12UFull call: Combine front, pressure, and coverage — and disguise it pre-snap.

How to teach it
- 1Three deep, four under — the corners and free safety take deep thirds; underneath backers take curl-flat and hook.
- 2Pattern-match the near receiver into your zone; don't chase across the field.
- 3Backers read run-pass keys: fill gaps on run, bail to zones on pass.
Common mistakes to fix
- !Corners bite up on run action and give up the deep third; fix by teaching them to stay deep until the run shows.
- !Underneath defenders drop to spots and ignore receivers; fix by teaching them to carry vertical routes and settle in the void.
