All-out man coverage with no deep safety help, usually paired with a blitz.

Concept: Every eligible receiver is matched man-to-man and the free safety adds to the rush or robs the middle.

Every position's job

DE (both)

Rush and contain the edge in all-out pressure.

Blitz an open gap or man-cover the near back with no deep help.

ILB (Will)

Blitz or man-cover the other back/tight end.

OLB (Sam)

Man-cover the tight end/No. 2 strong or add to the rush.

OLB (weak)

Man-cover No. 2 weak or blitz the edge.

CB (strong)

Press man the No. 1 strong with no safety help.

CB (weak)

Press man the No. 1 weak.

FS

Add to the rush or rob the middle since there is no deep help.

SS

Man-cover an eligible or blitz as assigned.

How to teach it

  • 1No deep help — everyone is man and the free defender rushes; get pressure home fast.
  • 2Corners press and trail with inside leverage; you must not get beaten deep clean.
  • 3Communicate the blitz and who has which man before the snap.

Common mistakes to fix

  • !Blitz doesn't get home and a receiver runs free deep; fix by timing the pressure to the snap and drilling the rush lanes.
  • !Corner gives cushion and the quick game beats the blitz; fix by teaching a tight press and jam.
