5-2 Cover 3
Oklahoma front with three-deep zone coverage behind it.
Concept: Both corners and the free safety split the deep thirds while backers and safety cover underneath zones.
Grows with your players
Same play, more layers as they age up — teach it once and build on it every season for a consistent program.
- 6UIntroduce: Line up right and own your gap — win with alignment, pad level, and pursuit to the ball.
- 8UAttack blocks: Add get-off and block destruction so the front controls the line of scrimmage.
- 10UAdd coverage: Teach the coverage drops behind the front and read run vs. pass.
- 12UFull call: Combine front, pressure, and coverage — and disguise it pre-snap.
Every position's job
0-technique, two-gap the center and rush the passer through the A-gaps.
5-technique C-gap, contain and rush the strong tackle.
5-technique C-gap, contain and rush the weak tackle.
Drop to the strong hook/curl, wall off crossers and read the quarterback's eyes.
Drop to the weak hook/curl, carry vertical seam and rob crossers.
Cover the strong underneath flat/curl zone, jump the out and flat.
Cover the deep middle third, stay on top of all inside verticals.
Cover the strong deep third, keep everything in front and inside.
Cover the weak deep third, stay over the top of the outside receiver.
How to teach it
- 1Corners bail at the snap keeping outside leverage and eyes on the number-one receiver's stem.
- 2Free safety plays over the top of the deepest inside threat and never lets a route behind him.
- 3Backers drop to zone landmarks (hook/curl), read the QB, and break on the throw.
Common mistakes to fix
- !Corners peeking in the backfield and giving up the deep third; fix by keeping eyes on the receiver and pedaling.
- !Backers dropping to a spot and stopping; fix by continuing to gain depth and match the deepest threat in the zone.
