Goal Line 5-3
Short-yardage adjustment adding a third linebacker to load the box at the goal line.
Concept: An extra backer walks into the box and all defenders fire their gap low to stop the dive.
Every position's job
Fire low into the A-gap, get penetration and stop the dive.
Fire low into the strong B-gap, penetrate and squeeze.
Fire low into the weak B-gap, penetrate and squeeze.
Attack the strong C-gap low, set a hard edge and spill.
Attack the weak C-gap low, set a hard edge and spill.
Plug the strong-side gap over the top, fill downhill on the dive.
Fill the middle A-gap over the top, meet the back at the line.
Plug the weak-side gap over the top, fill downhill.
Cover a receiver man or fill the alley on run.
How to teach it
- 1Everyone fires their gap low and gets penetration to stop the dive before the line of scrimmage.
- 2The extra (third) backer loads the box to outnumber the offense's blockers.
- 3Get pads under the offensive line's pads and create a wall at the goal line.
Common mistakes to fix
- !Linemen coming up high and getting driven back; fix by firing low with a flat back and leverage.
- !Backers waiting and getting reached; fix by attacking downhill into the gap on the snap.
