Every position's job

NG

Penetrate the A-gap first, occupy the center and guard to clear the loop.

DT (strong)

Loop behind the nose into the vacated inside A/B gap on the twist.

DE (strong)

Set the strong contain edge.

DE (weak)

Set the weak contain edge.

Mike

Read guard and fill inside, be ready for the ball off the twist.

Sam

Read guard, fill weak gap and check cutback.

SS

Roll to strong flat/curl support.

FS

Deep-middle center field.

CB (strong)

Cover strong receiver, force ball inside.

CB (weak)

Cover weak receiver, contain backside.

How to teach it

  • 1Nose penetrates first (the 'pick') to occupy blockers so the tackle can loop clean behind him.
  • 2Tackle stays tight to the nose's tail and loops into the inside gap, not looping wide.
  • 3Timing matters: nose goes, then tackle loops immediately behind.

Common mistakes to fix

  • !Tackle looping too wide and slow, letting the guard pass him off; fix by looping tight and fast behind the nose.
  • !Nose getting knocked back instead of penetrating; fix by getting low and winning the first step.
