6-2 Bluff Coverage

Backers walk up to show blitz then bail into zone to disguise intentions.

Concept: Linebackers creep to the line pre-snap then drop to their hook zones at the snap.

Same play, more layers as they age up — teach it once and build on it every season for a consistent program.

  1. 12UIntroduce: Line up right and own your gap — win with alignment, pad level, and pursuit to the ball.
  2. 14UAttack blocks: Add get-off and block destruction so the front controls the line of scrimmage. Teach the coverage drops behind the front and read run vs. pass. Combine front, pressure, and coverage — and disguise it pre-snap.

Every position's job

LB (strong)

Creep to the line pre-snap to show blitz, then drop to the strong hook zone at the snap.

LB (weak)

Creep to the line to bluff, then drop to the weak hook zone at the snap.

OLB (both)

Rush and contain the D gaps (or drop to a flat if the coverage call requires).

CB (strong)

Cover the strong deep third (or half per the coverage behind the bluff).

CB (weak)

Cover the weak deep third (or half).

FS

Cover the deep middle third (or rob the low hole in an invert-2 call).

How to teach it

  • 1The backers walk up to LOOK like a blitz, then bail to their hook zones at the snap to disguise the coverage.
  • 2The bail is timed to the snap — not early (tips it) or late (gives up the zone).
  • 3The real coverage behind the bluff — three-deep or invert-2 — must stay sound.

Common mistakes to fix

  • !The backers bail too early and the QB reads it; fix by teaching a snap-timed drop.
  • !The backers are late to the hook zones; fix by drilling the creep-then-bail footwork.
