Every position's job

Guard (stunt-side DL)

Defensive guard penetrates the A gap FIRST to occupy the interior blockers and open the loop lane.

DT (stunt-side)

Wide tackle loops behind the penetrating guard into the vacated B gap.

OLB (strong)

Hold the strong D gap and contain.

OLB (weak)

Hold the weak D gap and contain.

LB (strong)

Fit the strong B gap and be ready to replace if the twist is late.

CB (strong)

Cover the strong receiver / deep.

CB (weak)

Cover the weak receiver / deep.

FS

Play over the top and fill the alley.

How to teach it

  • 1The defensive guard penetrates the A gap FIRST to occupy blockers; the wide tackle loops behind into the B gap — drill the timing.
  • 2The looper stays tight to the guard's hip.
  • 3Best on passing downs — teach penetrate-then-loop, not both at once.

Common mistakes to fix

  • !The tackle loops too early before the guard occupies blockers; fix by teaching him to wait.
  • !The twist opens a run lane; fix by keeping it a passing-down call or having a backer plug.
