Jet / Buck Sweep Read
Quarterback reads the end to hand the jet or run the buck sweep himself.
Concept: Line blocks buck sweep as the quarterback reads the unblocked backside defender for the jet give.
Grows with your players
Same play, more layers as they age up — teach it once and build on it every season for a consistent program.
- 10UIntroduce: Nail the snap/exchange, aim the right hole, and finish downhill.
- 12UAdd the lead: Add the pulling guard(s) leading through the hole.
- 14UAdd the edge: Add the kickout block and run it to both sides. Add pre-snap motion to stress the defense's edge. Run it fast both directions and check into it by defensive look.
Every position's job
Read the unblocked backside defender: hand the jet to the wing or keep the buck sweep himself.
Run the jet motion as the give option, ready to race wide.
Fake or fill to hold the linebackers.
Pull to block the buck sweep scheme (kick out).
Pull to lead on the buck sweep.
Scoop or block back to seal the interior.
Down-block the first inside defender.
Zone/down-block, leaving the read defender unblocked.
Down-block inside to help the sweep.
Stalk-block the corner.
Block the overhang or safety.
How to teach it
- 1Line blocks buck sweep while the QB reads the unblocked backside defender for the jet give.
- 2QB gives the jet if the read man stays home, keeps the sweep if he chases.
- 3Backside must leave the read defender unblocked.
Common mistakes to fix
- !QB reads the wrong man — clearly identify the backside read defender.
- !Mesh muddled by slow read — quicken the give-or-keep decision.
