Every position's job

FB

Take the direct snap, aim for the A-gap, and run downhill off the trap block.

TB

Fake a path to hold the linebackers.

QB

Block the backside or fill for pursuit.

Backside Guard

Pull and trap-block the penetrating defensive tackle, kicking him out.

Center

Snap to the fullback, then block back on the backside gap.

Playside Guard

Down-block or release inside past the trapped man to the linebacker.

Playside Tackle

Down-block the first inside defender.

Playside End

Down-block inside or release to the second level.

Backside Tackle

Hinge and cut off backside pursuit.

How to teach it

  • 1Let the defensive tackle penetrate — the trap works because he comes upfield and gets kicked out.
  • 2Pulling guard traps with the inside shoulder and drives the man out.
  • 3Fullback hits the A-gap downhill right off the trap block.

Common mistakes to fix

  • !Center blocks the wrong man — fix by teaching him to block back and seal the backside.
  • !Trap guard is too high — fix by teaching a low, inside-out trap block.
