45 Buck Sweep
Fullback fakes the buck and the tailback sweeps wide behind pulling guards.
Concept: Both guards pull playside to lead the sweep as the fullback's dive fake holds the interior.
Grows with your players
Same play, more layers as they age up — teach it once and build on it every season for a consistent program.
- 10UIntroduce: Nail the snap/exchange, aim the right hole, and finish downhill.
- 12UAdd the lead: Add the pulling guard(s) leading through the hole.
- 14UAdd deception: Add the fake/mesh — and a counter off the very same look. Run it fast both directions and check into it by defensive look.
Every position's job
Take the buck/dive fake up the middle to hold the interior defenders.
Take the ball on the sweep and run wide behind both pulling guards.
Seal the edge or block the alley defender on the sweep side.
Lead-block around the edge or seal pursuit.
Reach or block down to seal the inside edge.
Down-block the first inside defender.
Pull playside and lead the sweep, kicking out the contain man.
Pull playside and wrap upfield to block the alley defender.
Snap the ball, then block back on the backside gap.
Hinge and cut off backside pursuit.
How to teach it
- 1The fullback's dive fake holds the interior so the guards can get to the corner.
- 2Both guards pull playside — first kicks out, second wraps up the alley.
- 3Tailback follows the pullers and turns up off their blocks.
Common mistakes to fix
- !Fullback's fake is weak and linebackers flow to the sweep — fix by drilling a hard buck fake.
- !Guards pull to the wrong depth — fix by teaching the first to kick, the second to wrap.
