Spinner 27 Tailback Keep
Fullback fakes the spin handoffs then keeps the ball wide toward the tailback side.
Concept: Linemen pull toward the perimeter as the spinning fullback carries the ball around end after showing both fakes.
Grows with your players
Same play, more layers as they age up — teach it once and build on it every season for a consistent program.
- 10UIntroduce: Nail the snap/exchange, aim the right hole, and finish downhill.
- 12UAdd the lead: Add the pulling guard(s) leading through the hole.
- 14UAdd deception: Add the fake/mesh — and a counter off the very same look. Run it fast both directions and check into it by defensive look.
Every position's job
Take the snap, spin and fake both handoffs, then keep the ball and carry it wide toward the tailback side.
Fake taking the ball on a path to sell the spin, then block or clear.
Fake the crossing handoff, then seal or block the edge.
Reach or seal the edge for the outside run.
Pull or reach toward the perimeter.
Pull toward the perimeter to lead the fullback.
Pull and lead around the edge.
Snap to the fullback, then block back on the backside.
Hinge and cut off backside pursuit.
How to teach it
- 1The fullback shows both fakes on the spin before keeping — sell each fake fully.
- 2Linemen pull to the perimeter to lead the fullback around end.
- 3Fullback carries the ball wide after both fakes hold the defense inside.
Common mistakes to fix
- !Fullback keeps too early and skips the fakes — fix by drilling both fakes before the keep.
- !Pullers are late to the corner — fix with a timed pull to the edge.
