QB Power Read
Quarterback reads the end and either gives the sweep or keeps on power.
Concept: Playside blocks down and the backside guard pulls to lead on the quarterback keep.
Grows with your players
Same play, more layers as they age up — teach it once and build on it every season for a consistent program.
- 8UIntroduce: Nail the snap/exchange, aim the right hole, and finish downhill.
- 10UAdd the lead: Add the pulling guard(s) leading through the hole.
- 12UAdd motion: Add pre-snap motion to stress the defense's edge.
- 14UMaster it: Run it fast both directions and check into it by defensive look.
Every position's job
Read the end man; give the sweep to the back or keep on power behind the pulling guard.
Run the sweep/jet path as the give option, pressing the perimeter.
Block down on the first inside defender.
Pull and lead through the hole for the QB keep.
Block back to seal the backside.
Down-block the defender inside.
Hinge or scoop to protect the backside.
Down-block inside to help the power scheme.
Stalk-block the corner on the give side.
Block the overhang or arc for the keep.
Cut off backside coverage.
How to teach it
- 1Playside blocks down; backside guard pulls to lead for the QB keep.
- 2QB reads the end man: give the sweep if he stays home, keep power if he chases.
- 3Back sells the sweep to hold the perimeter defenders.
Common mistakes to fix
- !QB reads the wrong defender — clearly identify the end man before the snap.
- !Pulling guard is late through the hole — emphasize a quick, tight pull.
