3/4 Trap
Fullback takes a quick handoff into the interior on a trap of the first defender inside.
Concept: Backside guard pulls to trap the penetrating tackle while the center and playside guard block down.
Grows with your players
Same play, more layers as they age up — teach it once and build on it every season for a consistent program.
- 6UIntroduce: Nail the snap/exchange, aim the right hole, and finish downhill.
- 8UAdd the lead: Add the pulling guard(s) leading through the hole.
- 10UAdd the edge: Add the kickout block and run it to both sides.
- 12UAdd deception: Add the fake/mesh — and a counter off the very same look.
- 14UMaster it: Run it fast both directions and check into it by defensive look.
Every position's job

Seal the edge or fake to hold the defense.
Fake or seal the backside to sell the play.
Pull and trap the penetrating tackle, kicking him out.
Snap the ball, then block down with the playside guard.
Block down inside to seal the trap lane.
Down-block the first inside defender.
Down-block inside or release to the second level.
Hinge and cut off backside pursuit.
How to teach it
- 1Let the penetrating tackle come upfield — the trap kicks him out.
- 2Center and playside guard block down while the backside guard traps.
- 3Fullback hits the interior downhill off the trap.
Common mistakes to fix
- !Playside guard blocks the trapped man — fix by teaching him to block down instead.
- !Trap guard is too high — fix by teaching a low, inside-out trap block.
