Double Wing
An extremely tight power-and-misdirection offense with two wingbacks and minimal splits, designed to flood the point of attack with blockers and mirror every play left and right. A proven youth win-now system.
Best fit
Great when you have physical, coachable linemen — ideally four kids who can pull — and want a low-passing, high-toughness attack. Outstanding for teams without a passing QB or standout speed.
Base formation & personnel
QB under center; two wingbacks (one each side, just outside/behind the TEs); a fullback behind the QB; two tight ends. Line splits are very tight (near foot-to-foot). The formation is symmetrical, so plays run identically both ways.
Core philosophy
- →Flood the point of attack: double teams plus pulling backside linemen out-number the defense.
- →Three-play core that mirrors both ways: FB Wedge, Super Power, and Counter.
- →Set the defense with power, then hit the counter when they over-pursue.
- →Tight splits and symmetry make it simple to teach and hard to read.
Bread-and-butter plays
The #1 youth double-wing play — quick FB hit between the tackles.
Blocking: All linemen surge forward together as a wedge.
Ball: Fullback downhill — ideal short-yardage / goal line.
Staple — motion a wing, toss/hand to the playside power.
Blocking: Flood the point with double teams; backside guard (often tackle) pulls to seal/lead; playside TE/wing kick and seal.
Ball: Playside wingback (or FB) behind the wall of pullers.
The #2 youth play — misdirection back against the flow.
Blocking: Pull linemen to the counter side to kick and lead; playside down-blocks; motion sells power the other way.
Ball: Counter wingback — run it once they cheat the power.
Quick inside hit on a penetrating DT.
Blocking: Playside down-blocks; backside guard pulls and traps.
Ball: FB or wing through the trap lane.
Power aimed just outside the tackle.
Blocking: Double-team the playside DT/DE; pull backside to lead; wing kicks the end.
Ball: Wingback off-tackle.
Fake power, QB keeps/boots to throw.
Blocking: Show power then protect the playside edge; TEs/wing release short.
Ball: QB throws to a wing/TE — a low-volume constraint.
Install progression
Week 1: Tight-split alignment, snap, motion timing; install FB Wedge + Super Power both ways; teach the double-team and backside pull.
Week 2: Add the Counter off power motion.
Week 3: Add the Trap and Off-Tackle power.
Week 4+: Add one bootleg/play-action pass. Keep it minimal — the double wing wins on reps of the core three.
