X Power (Wingback Power)
Wingback takes the handoff on the power track behind the pulling guards instead of the fullback.
Concept: Down-blocks and pulling guards lead the wing off-tackle with the opposite wing wrapping through.
Grows with your players
Same play, more layers as they age up — teach it once and build on it every season for a consistent program.
- 10UIntroduce: Nail the snap/exchange, aim the right hole, and finish downhill.
- 12UAdd the lead: Add the pulling guard(s) leading through the hole.
- 14UAdd the edge: Add the kickout block and run it to both sides. Add the fake/mesh — and a counter off the very same look. Run it fast both directions and check into it by defensive look.
Every position's job
Take the handoff on the power track and follow the pulling guards off-tackle.
Take the snap, hand to the playside wing, and carry out a fake.
Fake the power or fill to hold the linebackers.
Wrap through the hole and lead-block the linebacker.
Down-block the first inside defender to seal the seam.
Down-block inside to help build the wall.
Pull and lead through the off-tackle hole.
Pull behind and wrap up through the hole.
Snap the ball, then block back on the backside gap.
Hinge and cut off backside pursuit.
How to teach it
- 1Same power scheme but the wingback carries — the opposite wing wraps through.
- 2Down-blocks and pulling guards lead the wing off-tackle.
- 3Wingback follows the pullers patiently into the hole.
Common mistakes to fix
- !Wing outruns the pullers — fix by teaching him to be patient behind the guards.
- !Backside wing wraps too wide — fix by aiming him tight through the hole.
