XX Counter
Backs show power flow one way and the wingback counters back the opposite direction off-tackle.
Concept: Backside guard and tackle pull to kick out and wrap up through the counter hole as the line shows power.
Grows with your players
Same play, more layers as they age up — teach it once and build on it every season for a consistent program.
- 10UIntroduce: Nail the snap/exchange, aim the right hole, and finish downhill.
- 12UAdd the lead: Add the pulling guard(s) leading through the hole.
- 14UAdd the edge: Add the kickout block and run it to both sides. Add the fake/mesh — and a counter off the very same look. Run it fast both directions and check into it by defensive look.
Every position's job
Show power flow one way to hold the defense.
Take the snap, fake power one way, then hand to the wingback countering back off-tackle.
Take the counter handoff and hit the off-tackle hole the opposite way.
Sell the power flow, then seal or fill.
Pull and kick out the end man on the counter side.
Pull and wrap up through the counter hole to the linebacker.
Down-block the first inside defender to seal the counter lane.
Down-block inside to open the counter hole.
Show power flow, then block back for the counter.
Snap the ball, then block back on the backside gap.
How to teach it
- 1Backs show power flow one way before the wingback counters back.
- 2Backside guard kicks out and the backside tackle wraps through the hole.
- 3Line shows power to pull the linebackers before the counter hits.
Common mistakes to fix
- !Pullers collide — fix by having the guard kick first, tackle wrap behind.
- !Wingback beats the pullers to the hole — fix by teaching patience.
