Inside Veer Right

Quarterback rides the fullback into the B-gap and reads the first man past the tackle to give or keep.

Every position's job

QB

Ride the B-back into the B-gap and read the first man past the playside tackle (the veer-released end) to give if he stays, keep if he chases.

B-back

Aim for the outside leg of the playside guard, run downhill into the B-gap, and let the QB decide give or keep off your ride.

Playside A-back

Arc-release outside to block the alley/force defender for the QB keep phase.

Backside A-back

Come in motion to a pitch relationship and be ready to take a pitch if the QB keeps.

Playside Tackle

Veer-release inside to the playside linebacker, deliberately leaving the dive-key end unblocked.

Playside Guard

Down-block or veer inside to the first inside threat, working combo up to the linebacker.

Center

Block back on the backside A-gap defender or the nose.

Backside Guard

Scoop/cut-off the backside gap to wall off pursuit.

Backside Tackle

Hinge/scoop the backside C-gap to protect the QB's keep lane.

Split End

Stalk-block the corner or run off the deep third to clear space.

Playside Slot

See playside A-back; arc to the force defender.

How to teach it

  • 1Rep the mesh slow: B-back runs a soft path so the QB can see the read defender clearly before pulling.
  • 2Teach the QB one key only — eyes on the first man past the tackle: he squeezes, you give; he stays home, you pull.
  • 3Playside tackle must climb INSIDE the read end, not block him — walk them through it so they trust leaving him free.

Common mistakes to fix

  • !QB reads the wrong defender (blocks the read); fix by having the tackle point out the dive key pre-snap and drilling the mesh at half speed.
  • !B-back drifts wide of the guard's outside leg; fix by placing a cone at the aiming point and checking his first two steps.
