Flexbone (Triple Option)

An option offense where the QB reads unblocked defenders after the snap and decides in real time to hand off (dive), keep, or pitch — mathematically stressing the defense by making unblocked men wrong.

Base offense alignment — schematic, not to scale

Best fit

Needs a smart, decisive QB who can execute reads and pitches, a tough dive fullback, and disciplined linemen who can cut/combo block. Best for teams that will commit serious practice time to option mesh work — not plug-and-play.

Base formation & personnel

Flexbone: QB under center (or pistol), a fullback directly behind, and two slotbacks split just behind the line each side; two receivers, five linemen. Wishbone: QB with a fullback close behind and two halfbacks behind and outside, forming a 'Y.' Both are three-back, run-first sets.

Core philosophy

  • Triple option: read the dive key (a DT/DE) to give or pull, then the pitch key (next defender out) to keep or pitch.
  • Assignment blocking: block down and leave the read defender(s) unblocked; combo up to linebackers.
  • Inside veer reads the end; midline reads an interior defender — different reads keep defenses guessing.
  • Cut and combo blocking create seams; slotbacks pitch/lead and block the perimeter.

Bread-and-butter plays

Inside Veer

The base triple option.

Blocking: Playside line blocks down inside the hole, leaving the DE unblocked as the read; backside cuts off pursuit; slot arcs to the pitch key.

Ball: QB gives to the FB if the DE stays wide; pulls if he crashes; pitches to the trailing slot if the pitch key takes the QB.

Midline

Triple/double option reading an interior defender.

Blocking: Down-blocking with the read on a DT.

Ball: QB reads the DT — give to the FB up the middle or pull and keep/pitch.

Midline Trap

A give-oriented changeup.

Blocking: A guard traps the read-side interior defender instead of optioning him.

Ball: Fullback straight up the middle behind the trap.

Counter Option

Show one way, run option back the other.

Blocking: Backside pullers/kickers.

Ball: QB options to the counter side — punishes fast flow.

Zone Dive

A simple, safe inside run (a called give, no read).

Blocking: Zone-step combo blocks.

Ball: Fullback downhill — complements the option series.

Veer Pass

Constraint play off the option fake.

Blocking: Show run then protect; slots/receivers run pitch-and-go, post, or wheel.

Ball: QB throws once the defense crowds the run.

Install progression

1

Week 1: Alignment, snap, and the FB dive mesh; install Zone Dive (no read) so the mesh is clean before adding reads.

2

Week 2: Install Inside Veer as a 'double option' (give or keep) — solidify the dive read before the pitch.

3

Week 3: Add the pitch phase to make it a true triple option; add Midline.

4

Week 4+: Add Midline Trap, Counter Option, and one veer play-action. This system needs the most install time here.
