Load Option Right
Quarterback runs the option with the playside slot loading down on the pitch-key defender.
Concept: Slot blocks the force defender (load) so the quarterback attacks downhill and pitches off the next man.
Grows with your players
Same play, more layers as they age up — teach it once and build on it every season for a consistent program.
- 8UIntroduce: Nail the snap/exchange, aim the right hole, and finish downhill.
- 10UAdd the edge: Add the kickout block and run it to both sides.
- 12UAdd motion: Add pre-snap motion to stress the defense's edge.
- 14UMaster it: Run it fast both directions and check into it by defensive look.
Every position's job
Run the option downhill and read the next man past the loaded force defender — keep or pitch to the trailing slot.
Fake or fill the dive to hold the interior.
Load-block (block down on) the pitch-key/force defender to give the QB a clean edge.
Maintain the pitch relationship for the pitch.
Veer-block inside to the linebacker.
Veer inside and combo to the linebacker.
Block back to the backside.
Scoop and seal backside.
Hinge to protect backside.
Stalk the corner or clear coverage.
How to teach it
- 1The load block changes the read — QB now pitches off the NEXT man, not the force man; rep the new read.
- 2Slot loads (blocks) the force defender aggressively — drill the down-block angle and finish.
- 3QB attacks downhill fast since the edge is cleaned up by the load.
Common mistakes to fix
- !Slot whiffs the load and the force defender makes the QB pitch early; fix by teaching a tight down angle and eyes on the near hip.
- !QB still reads the loaded man; fix by reminding him the load man is blocked — pitch the next defender.
