Outside Veer

Quarterback reads the end man on the line and gives the fullback wider off-tackle or keeps.

Concept: Playside tackle base-blocks and the fullback aims outside the tackle as the quarterback reads the edge.

Every position's job

QB

Read the end man on the line of scrimmage and give the B-back wider off-tackle if the end stays, keep off the edge if he squeezes.

B-back

Aim outside the playside tackle (wider than inside veer) for the off-tackle give.

Playside Slot

Arc to the alley/force defender for the keep.

Pitch Slot

Trail in pitch relationship for a keep-pitch if built in.

Playside Tackle

Base-block the man over him so the B-back can run off his outside hip.

Playside Guard

Down/base-block the first inside threat and combo to the linebacker.

Center

Block back to the backside.

Backside Tackle

Hinge to protect backside.

Split End

Stalk the corner or clear coverage.

Frontside A-back

Arc to the alley defender.

How to teach it

  • 1Aiming point is wider than inside veer — outside the tackle; rep the wider dive track.
  • 2Playside tackle base-blocks (does not veer past) so the give lane opens off-tackle.
  • 3QB reads the EMOL — squeeze equals keep, sit equals give.

Common mistakes to fix

  • !QB confuses the read with inside veer and reads the wrong man; fix by IDing the EMOL aloud pre-snap.
  • !B-back runs too tight and clogs with the tackle; fix by widening his aiming point with a cone.
