Rocket Toss Right
Full-speed rocket motion wingback takes a long toss and sprints to the perimeter.
Concept: Playside linemen reach-block to the outside as the tackle and wing pin the edge for the rocket runner.
Grows with your players
Same play, more layers as they age up — teach it once and build on it every season for a consistent program.
- 8UIntroduce: Nail the snap/exchange, aim the right hole, and finish downhill.
- 10UAdd motion: Add pre-snap motion to stress the defense's edge.
- 12UAdd the pass: Add the play-action throw off this run action.
- 14UMaster it: Run it fast both directions and check into it by defensive look.
Every position's job
Reverse-open and deliver a long rocket toss out in front of the full-speed motion wing, then carry out a bootleg fake.
Take full-speed rocket motion, catch the long toss on the run, and sprint to and around the perimeter.
Arc-block the alley/force defender to spring the runner.
Fold or cut off backside pursuit.
Reach-block outside and pin the edge with the wing.
Reach-block to the outside to seal the interior playside gap.
Reach playside and cut off the backside pursuit.
Pull or scoop to seal backside.
Scoop/cut off the backside.
Stalk-block the corner.
Fake the dive/fill to hold the interior and cut off pursuit.
How to teach it
- 1Timing is everything — the toss must lead the wing so he catches at full speed without slowing.
- 2Playside linemen reach to the outside; drill the reach-and-run footwork to get their heads across.
- 3Tackle and wing must pin the edge together — rep the double pin on the force defender.
Common mistakes to fix
- !QB tosses behind the runner and he has to slow down; fix by leading the toss and drilling the pitch relationship at speed.
- !Linemen can't reach the edge defender; fix by teaching an angle/scoop and cutting off pursuit instead of chasing.
