Speed Option Right
Quarterback attacks the pitch key immediately with no dive phase and options to the slot.
Concept: Playside line reaches to the edge while the quarterback pitches off the first unblocked perimeter defender.
Grows with your players
Same play, more layers as they age up — teach it once and build on it every season for a consistent program.
- 8UIntroduce: Nail the snap/exchange, aim the right hole, and finish downhill.
- 10UAdd motion: Add pre-snap motion to stress the defense's edge.
- 12UMaster it: Run it fast both directions and check into it by defensive look.
Every position's job
No dive phase — attack the pitch key immediately and option (keep or pitch) off the first unblocked perimeter defender.
Get into the pitch relationship quickly for the pitch.
Arc to the alley if not the pitch back, or block the next defender out.
Fill/fake to hold the interior and cut off pursuit.
Reach-block to the edge.
Reach-block playside to seal the interior gap.
Reach playside and cut off backside.
Scoop and seal backside.
Scoop the backside.
Stalk the corner.
How to teach it
- 1No mesh — the QB gets to the pitch key fast; rep the pitch relationship at full speed.
- 2Line reaches playside since there is no dive read; drill the reach footwork.
- 3QB attacks the first unblocked perimeter defender's inside shoulder and pitches as he commits.
Common mistakes to fix
- !QB is too deep/slow getting to the edge; fix by teaching a downhill, flat pitch path.
- !Pitch back too close to the QB; fix by drilling the 4x1 relationship.
