Triple Option Left
Mirror full triple option left with dive, keep, and pitch phases off the two reads.
Concept: Playside tackle veers inside to the linebacker while the pitch slot runs the pitch relationship deep.
Grows with your players
Same play, more layers as they age up — teach it once and build on it every season for a consistent program.
- 10UIntroduce: Nail the snap/exchange, aim the right hole, and finish downhill.
- 12UAdd motion: Add pre-snap motion to stress the defense's edge.
- 14UAdd deception: Add the fake/mesh — and a counter off the very same look. Run it fast both directions and check into it by defensive look.
Every position's job
Mirror the triple left — read dive key for give, then attack pitch key to keep or pitch deep.
Dive at the playside guard's outside leg; take the give if handed.
Run the deep pitch relationship for the pitch phase.
Veer inside to the playside linebacker, leaving the dive key free.
Veer inside and combo to the linebacker.
Block back to the backside A-gap.
Scoop and seal backside.
Hinge to protect backside.
Stalk or clear coverage.
See B-back dive assignment above.
How to teach it
- 1Equal left-handed reps of both reads.
- 2Pitch slot keeps the deep pitch relationship — never crowd the QB.
- 3Tackle veers to the linebacker; trust leaving the dive key.
Common mistakes to fix
- !QB gives when the dive key sits, keeps when he crashes (reversed); fix with slow-mo read drills.
- !Pitch slot outruns the QB; fix by teaching him to mirror the QB's speed in the relationship.
