Triple Option Right

Quarterback reads the dive key for give, then attacks the pitch key to keep or pitch to the trailing slot.

Concept: Line veer-blocks inside as the playside slot arc-releases to the alley and the backside slot pitches deep.

Every position's job

QB

Ride FB reading the dive key; if give unclear pull, then attack downhill and pitch off the pitch key.

FB

Dive aim at the playside guard-tackle gap, ball on same track every rep.

Playside Slot

Arc and block the deepest run-support defender (safety).

Backside Slot

Pitch back trailing at pitch relationship.

Playside OL

Veer release, leave dive key free, climb to the second-level defender.

Backside OL

Scoop and wall backside pursuit.

Center

Reach or scoop to seal the playside A-gap.

WR

Stalk-block the corner over the top of the play.

How to teach it

  • 1Two clean reads: dive first, pitch second.
  • 2Pitch back never crosses the QB's face.
  • 3QB gets north-south quickly once he keeps.

Common mistakes to fix

  • !QB tries to run through the pitch key instead of pitching (fix: coach the phrase 'the defense decides' at each read).
  • !Slot blocks the wrong support defender (fix: identify the alley player pre-snap in the huddle).
