Triple Option Right
Quarterback reads the dive key for give, then attacks the pitch key to keep or pitch to the trailing slot.
Concept: Line veer-blocks inside as the playside slot arc-releases to the alley and the backside slot pitches deep.
Grows with your players
Same play, more layers as they age up — teach it once and build on it every season for a consistent program.
- 10UIntroduce: Nail the snap/exchange, aim the right hole, and finish downhill.
- 12UAdd motion: Add pre-snap motion to stress the defense's edge.
- 14UAdd deception: Add the fake/mesh — and a counter off the very same look. Run it fast both directions and check into it by defensive look.
Every position's job
Read the dive key (first man past the tackle) for give; if keep, attack the pitch key and pitch to the trailing slot or keep.
Run the dive path at the guard's outside leg and take the give if the QB hands it.
Arc-release to the alley and block the alley/force defender.
Run the deep pitch relationship, staying 4x1 behind and outside the QB for the pitch.
Veer-release inside to the playside linebacker, leaving the dive key free.
Veer inside and combo to the linebacker.
Block back on the backside A-gap/nose.
Scoop and seal backside.
Hinge/scoop the backside.
Stalk the corner or clear the deep third.
See B-back dive assignment above.
How to teach it
- 1Two reads, one at a time: read the dive key first, then the pitch key — rep them separately before combining.
- 2Pitch slot maintains the pitch relationship (about 4 yards deep, 1 yard behind); drill the relationship at speed.
- 3Playside tackle veers inside to the linebacker; make him trust leaving the dive key unblocked.
Common mistakes to fix
- !QB pitches off the wrong defender or too late; fix by drilling 'attack the pitch key's inside shoulder, pitch as he commits.'
- !Pitch slot runs too flat or too close; fix by marking the pitch relationship with cones.
