Veer Pass (Play-Action)

Quarterback fakes the triple option then throws deep to a slot or split end off the run action.

Concept: Playside slot arc-releases as if to block then slips vertical while the backside end runs a post.

Every position's job

QB

Carry out a full triple-option fake, then set and throw deep to the slot seam or split-end post off the run action.

B-back

Run the dive fake hard to suck the linebackers up.

Playside Slot

Arc-release as if to block, then slip vertical up the seam.

Split End (backside)

Run a post behind the biting corner.

Pitch Slot

Fake the pitch relationship then release or check-release as a safety valve.

Playside Tackle

Show the veer release then set to pass-protect the edge.

Playside Guard

Aggressive run-block show, then pass-set inside.

Center

Run-block show, then set and protect the A-gaps.

Backside Guard

Set and protect the backside interior.

Backside Tackle

Set and protect the backside edge (QB's blind side).

Frontside A-back

Arc-block show then leak into the flat as an outlet.

How to teach it

  • 1The run fake must look identical to the triple option — sell the mesh before the QB pulls up.
  • 2Slot arc-releases like a blocker before slipping vertical; drill the fake-block-to-vertical stem.
  • 3Line shows run then protects — teach the fine line so it's not an illegal-man-downfield risk.

Common mistakes to fix

  • !Linemen release downfield (ineligible) on the run show; fix by teaching them to stay at the line on the pass.
  • !QB rushes the fake and defense reads pass; fix by drilling a full, patient run fake before throwing.
