Every position's job

QB

Take the snap, open and hand to the tailback on a downhill track, then boot the backside.

TB

Aim for the playside A-gap, read the first down lineman, and cut back or bang it front-side off his block.

FB

Lead through the hole and block the first wrong-colored jersey at the second level.

Playside Guard

Zone-step playside and combo the down lineman up to the linebacker.

Center

Zone-step playside and combo with the guard, working to the backside linebacker.

Playside Tackle

Zone-step playside and reach/combo the defender up to the second level.

Backside Guard

Zone-step playside and cover the backside A-gap defender.

Backside Tackle

Zone-step playside and cut off the backside pursuit.

TE

Zone-step and combo the end up to the playside linebacker.

Split End

Stalk-block the corner and cut off the deep safety.

How to teach it

  • 1Teach the covered/uncovered rule so linemen know when to combo and when to climb.
  • 2Tailback presses the line of scrimmage and makes one cut off the first down lineman.
  • 3Everybody takes the same playside zone step in unison off the snap.

Common mistakes to fix

  • !Tailback bounces instead of pressing and cutting — fix with a downhill one-cut drill.
  • !Linemen come off the double-team too early — fix by teaching them to stay until the linebacker declares.
