I-Formation

A classic downhill power-running offense — QB under center with a fullback and tailback stacked in an 'I.' Physical, simple, and built to give one talented tailback the ball behind a lead blocker.

Best fit

Ideal when you have one clearly dominant running back and a willing lead-blocking fullback. Balanced and easy to understand — a strong default for teams that want to be physical without a lot of moving parts.

Base formation & personnel

QB under center; fullback ~3–4 yards deep; tailback stacked directly behind (~6–7 yards). Typically one or two TEs and one or two WRs, five linemen. 'Power-I' adds a third back for extra strong-side power.

Core philosophy

  • Downhill, north-south power running with a lead blocker in front of a talented tailback.
  • The fullback clears the path; the tailback reads the block and cuts.
  • Establish power/off-tackle, then punish over-pursuit with counter and misdirection off the same look.
  • Balanced enough to threaten play-action once the run is respected.

Bread-and-butter plays

Power (Blast)

Tailback runs off-tackle behind the fullback.

Blocking: Playside TE/T/G down-block or double the DE/DT; backside guard pulls and turns up; FB leads through and blocks the first man in the hole.

Ball: Tailback following the FB and pulling guard.

Iso (Isolation)

Tailback hits an interior gap with the FB isolating one LB.

Blocking: Line blocks base/down to create the gap; FB blocks the playside LB one-on-one.

Ball: Tailback straight downhill.

Dive

Quick FB or TB dive between the tackles.

Blocking: Combo/down blocks at the A/B gap.

Ball: Fullback (or tailback) — holds inside defenders.

Counter

Tailback takes the ball against the flow after showing power.

Blocking: Backside guard (sometimes tackle) pulls to kick and lead weak-side; playside down-blocks; FB fakes.

Ball: Tailback going away from flow.

Toss / Sweep

Quick toss to the tailback on the perimeter.

Blocking: Playside reach/down blocks; backside seals; FB & TE lead/kick the edge.

Ball: Tailback getting to the corner.

Waggle / Power Pass

Fake power, boot or set up, throw.

Blocking: Show run then protect; TE/WRs run a short-medium flood.

Ball: QB throws off the run fake.

Install progression

1

Week 1: Alignment, stances, snap; install Power + Dive both ways; teach FB lead-blocking footwork.

2

Week 2: Add Iso and the backside guard pull for Power/Counter.

3

Week 3: Add Counter and Toss/Sweep.

4

Week 4+: Add the Waggle/Power-Pass once the run is respected.
