I-Formation
A classic downhill power-running offense — QB under center with a fullback and tailback stacked in an 'I.' Physical, simple, and built to give one talented tailback the ball behind a lead blocker.
Best fit
Ideal when you have one clearly dominant running back and a willing lead-blocking fullback. Balanced and easy to understand — a strong default for teams that want to be physical without a lot of moving parts.
Base formation & personnel
QB under center; fullback ~3–4 yards deep; tailback stacked directly behind (~6–7 yards). Typically one or two TEs and one or two WRs, five linemen. 'Power-I' adds a third back for extra strong-side power.
Core philosophy
- →Downhill, north-south power running with a lead blocker in front of a talented tailback.
- →The fullback clears the path; the tailback reads the block and cuts.
- →Establish power/off-tackle, then punish over-pursuit with counter and misdirection off the same look.
- →Balanced enough to threaten play-action once the run is respected.
