Every position's job

QB

Take the snap, open and hand the ball to the tailback hitting straight downhill in the two hole, then fake out the back door.

TB

Take the handoff and run straight ahead off the fullback's block, cutting off whichever way the fullback walls the linebacker.

FB

Lead straight into the hole and isolate the playside linebacker, blocking him whichever way he flows.

Playside Guard

Base-block the down defender over or inside to hold the line of scrimmage.

Backside Guard

Base-block the backside down defender and stop penetration.

Center

Base-block the nose or first man over and secure the A-gap.

Playside Tackle

Base-block the defender head-up and drive him off the ball.

Backside Tackle

Base-block and cut off backside pursuit.

TE

Base-block the end or climb to seal the second level on the playside.

Split End

Stalk-block the corner or run off the safety to clear the deep alley.

How to teach it

  • 1Drill the fullback-linebacker collision at a fit-and-freeze pace before going live.
  • 2Teach the tailback to run to daylight and cut off the fullback's helmet.
  • 3Everyone up front base-blocks — no pulling, so stress winning the man across from you.

Common mistakes to fix

  • !Fullback ducks his head and misses the linebacker — fix by teaching eyes-up, chin-back contact.
  • !Tailback outruns his blocker — fix by having him gather and read the fullback before cutting.
