Outside Zone Right
Tailback stretches the ball wide reading the edge to bounce or cut up.
Concept: Line reach-blocks to hook and seal defenders while the fullback leads to the perimeter.
Grows with your players
Same play, more layers as they age up — teach it once and build on it every season for a consistent program.
- 6UIntroduce: Nail the snap/exchange, aim the right hole, and finish downhill.
- 8UAdd the edge: Add the kickout block and run it to both sides.
- 10UAdd deception: Add the fake/mesh — and a counter off the very same look.
- 12UMaster it: Run it fast both directions and check into it by defensive look.
Every position's job
Take the snap, open and stretch the handoff to the tailback on a wide track, then fake away.
Stretch the ball to the edge, read the reach blocks, and bounce, bang, or cut up based on the defense.
Lead to the perimeter and block the force/contain defender to spring the edge.
Reach-block to hook the edge defender and seal him inside.
Reach-step and hook or overtake the down lineman.
Reach-step playside and cover the backside A-gap.
Reach-step playside and scoop the backside gap.
Reach-step and cut off the backside chase.
Reach-block to hook the end and seal the perimeter.
Stalk-block the corner to hold the edge alley.
How to teach it
- 1Drill the reach step — playside foot gains ground and width to get the hook.
- 2Tailback keeps his shoulders square and reads the edge to bounce or cut.
- 3Fullback flattens to the perimeter to log or kick the force defender.
Common mistakes to fix
- !Linemen get beat across their face on the reach — fix by teaching a wider, flatter first step.
- !Tailback cuts up too fast — fix by having him keep stretching until the lane declares.
