Play-Action Boot Left
Quarterback fakes the run and boots left with a flood of receivers.
Concept: Backside protects the edge while the tight end drags and the flanker runs a corner.
Every position's job
Fake the run to the tailback, boot left off the fake, and read the flood — drag, corner, or run.
Carry out the run fake into the line to freeze the linebackers.
Fake or release to the flat as the short flood option.
Drag across the field at intermediate depth as the middle flood route.
Run a corner route to stretch the flood high on the boot side.
Hinge-protect the boot-side edge.
Cut off or seal the backside rush so the QB can boot clean.
Show run, then protect the playside interior.
Show run block, then anchor the middle of the pocket.
How to teach it
- 1Build the three-level flood: flat, drag, and corner so the QB has high-low reads.
- 2Backside must seal the edge so the QB's boot lane stays clean.
- 3QB gets depth on the boot and keeps his eyes downfield while gaining ground.
Common mistakes to fix
- !Backside end chases and blows up the boot — fix by assigning a firm backside cut/hinge block.
- !Routes come open at the same depth — fix by spacing the flat, drag, and corner at three levels.
