Every position's job

QB

Open to the right, take the snap, reverse pivot and hand to the tailback hitting the off-tackle hole, then carry out a bootleg fake.

TB

Take a lateral jab then aim for the outside hip of the playside tackle, reading the fullback's kickout and the pulling guard's lead block.

FB

Lead through the hole and kick out the end man on the line of scrimmage, blocking him out toward the sideline.

Playside Tackle

Down-block the first defender inside to wall off the interior and seal the hole.

Playside Guard

Down-block the man over the center or the first inside defender, sealing the backside gap.

Center

Block back on the backside A-gap defender to protect the pulling guard's vacated area.

Backside Guard

Pull flat and tight, turn up through the hole, and lead-block the first linebacker you see.

Backside Tackle

Hinge-block and cut off any backside penetration chasing the play.

TE

Down-block or combo the defensive end/tackle with the playside tackle up to the linebacker.

Wingback

Arc or seal the outside force defender to keep contain from squeezing the hole.

How to teach it

  • 1Walk the pulling guard's path first: pull flat, don't go deep, and turn up in the hole reading the linebacker.
  • 2Teach the fullback to kick out with his inside shoulder and run through the end man, not around him.
  • 3Have the tailback stay patient and let the blocks develop before pressing the hole.

Common mistakes to fix

  • !Pulling guard goes too deep and misses the hole — fix by having him take a flat first step and hug the down-blocks.
  • !Fullback logs the end instead of kicking out — fix by drilling inside-shoulder contact driving the defender toward the sideline.
