Buck Sweep Right
Halfback takes the handoff and follows two pulling guards around the right end.
Concept: Both guards pull right (playside guard kicks out the end man, backside guard turns up to lead), fullback fills for the backside guard.
Grows with your players
Same play, more layers as they age up — teach it once and build on it every season for a consistent program.
- 10UIntroduce: Nail the snap/exchange, aim the right hole, and finish downhill.
- 12UAdd the lead: Add the pulling guard(s) leading through the hole.
- 14UAdd the edge: Add the kickout block and run it to both sides. Add the fake/mesh — and a counter off the very same look. Run it fast both directions and check into it by defensive look.
Every position's job
Reverse-pivot, hand to the halfback on the sweep path, then carry out a naked buck fake to the fullback to hold the backside.
Take the handoff, belly slightly to let both guards clear, then read the playside guard's kickout and cut off the backside guard's up-block.
Fake the buck dive into the line and fill for the vacated backside guard to stop backside penetration.
Pull right and kick out the first defender outside the tight end (the end man on the line).
Pull right, run behind the playside guard's kickout, and turn up through the hole to lead-block the first linebacker.
Reach or scoop-block backside to seal the down lineman away from the pulling guards.
Down-block the first defender inside to create the seam for the pullers.
Scoop-block backside and cut off pursuit chasing down the line.
Down-block the defender inside of him to help wall off the edge for the sweep.
Down-block or seal the force defender to help turn the corner.
Stalk-block the cornerback to your side to clear the perimeter.
How to teach it
- 1Guards pull with an open first step (not around the QB), keeping shoulders square down the line.
- 2Halfback stays patient one count so both guards get out ahead — don't outrun your blockers.
- 3Playside guard kicks OUT, backside guard leads UP; drill the two paths separately before combining.
Common mistakes to fix
- !Halfback bounces too wide before the pullers arrive — teach him to press the hole and cut off the lead guard.
- !Guards pull too flat and trip over feet — teach a rip-and-run technique gaining depth off the ball.
