Wing-T
A ball-control, misdirection offense built on interlocking series (buck, belly, jet) where every play looks the same at the mesh — freezing young defenders. One of the most successful youth systems ever.
Best fit
Great when you have solid, coachable linemen (especially two guards who can pull) and interchangeable backs, but no single superstar. Wins with execution and deception, so it's forgiving for average-athlete teams.
Base formation & personnel
QB under center; fullback directly behind; halfback offset weak-side; wingback tucked outside/behind the strong-side tight end. One TE, one split end, five linemen. Tight line splits create natural angles.
Core philosophy
- →Series football — buck, belly, and jet all start with identical backfield action so the defense can't key the ball.
- →Pulling guards and down-blocks create numbers and angles at the point of attack.
- →Motion and fakes stress defensive assignment discipline, which young defenses lack.
- →Everything sets up something else: the sweep sets up the counter; off-tackle sets up the bootleg.
Bread-and-butter plays
The trademark play — wingback carries around the strong-side end.
Blocking: Playside TE & tackle down-block; playside guard pulls and kicks the end; backside guard pulls and leads up through the hole; center blocks back; FB fakes dive.
Ball: Wingback, following the two pulling guards.
Quick inside hitter that mirrors the sweep mesh.
Blocking: Line down-blocks or a guard traps the first penetrating DT; center & playside guard combo the nose.
Ball: Fullback attacking the A/B gap — sells the sweep.
Back hits the C-gap off tackle behind a double team.
Blocking: Playside tackle & TE double the DE/OLB; playside guard blocks down; backside fills.
Ball: Halfback or wingback off-tackle.
Backside back cuts against the grain after sweep flow.
Blocking: Backside guard (sometimes tackle) pulls to kick and lead weak-side; playside down-blocks.
Ball: Counter back going away from flow — punishes over-pursuit.
QB fakes buck sweep, hides the ball, and rolls opposite.
Blocking: Line shows sweep then a guard pulls to protect; TE/WB/backs flood 3 levels (flat, crossing, deep).
Ball: QB throws or tucks and runs — the built-in play-action shot.
Wingback/slot in full jet motion takes a quick handoff to the edge.
Blocking: Playside reach/down blocks; backside seals.
Ball: Motion man — the fastest perimeter hitter.
Install progression
Week 1: Formation, alignment, snap count; install Buck Sweep both ways + the FB Dive/Belly (the mesh that ties the series together). Teach guard pulls on air.
Week 2: Add the Down/Off-Tackle play and the Counter off sweep action.
Week 3: Add jet motion + Jet Sweep and the Waggle/Bootleg pass.
Week 4+: Layer a second formation and reverses. Repetition of the base series beats volume.
