Every position's job

QB

Take the snap, ride the fullback into the 0/middle, and hand him the ball off the buck action.

FB

Take the handoff straight up the middle, aiming just off the center's playside hip, reading the trap block.

HB

Carry out the sweep fake to hold the perimeter defenders.

Playside Guard

Down-block the first defender to your inside to help wall the middle.

Backside Guard

Pull and trap-block the first down lineman past the center, kicking him out to open the hole.

Center

Down-block or block back on the nose/first backside threat.

Playside Tackle

Down-block the defender inside of you to the second level.

Backside Tackle

Down-block or hinge to protect against backside penetration.

TE

Block down or release to the linebacker level playside.

Split End

Stalk-block the corner or run off the safety.

WB

Fill or arc to hold the edge defender.

How to teach it

  • 1Backside guard pulls flat and traps with his outside shoulder, hitting the defender's inside number.
  • 2Fullback runs downhill and cuts off the trap block, not around it.
  • 3Whole line down-blocks in the same direction to create the influence for the trap.

Common mistakes to fix

  • !Trapping guard aims too deep and misses the man — teach a tight, flat pull hugging the line.
  • !Fullback drifts and bounces outside — keep his shoulders square and hit it north-south.
