Counter Criss-Cross Left
Wingback comes in motion opposite the flow and takes a reverse-style handoff.
Concept: Line blocks away from the counter as the wingback cuts back against the grain behind a pulling guard.
Grows with your players
Same play, more layers as they age up — teach it once and build on it every season for a consistent program.
- 10UIntroduce: Nail the snap/exchange, aim the right hole, and finish downhill.
- 12UAdd the lead: Add the pulling guard(s) leading through the hole.
- 14UAdd motion: Add pre-snap motion to stress the defense's edge. Add the fake/mesh — and a counter off the very same look. Run it fast both directions and check into it by defensive look.
Every position's job
Take the snap, fake the flow one way, and hand to the wingback coming in motion the opposite way.
Come in motion opposite the flow, take the reverse-style handoff, and cut back against the grain behind the pull.
Fake the sweep with the flow to sell the misdirection.
Fake a dive or fill to hold the linebackers.
Block away from the counter (blocking the flow scheme).
Pull back toward the counter to lead through the hole.
Block back or scoop to seal the interior.
Down-block with the flow scheme to sell the direction.
Hinge or cut off pursuit to the counter side.
Block down with the flow or seal the counter edge.
Stalk or crack-block to clear the counter alley.
How to teach it
- 1Line blocks away from the counter to sell flow; a guard pulls back to lead the wing.
- 2Wingback times his motion to arrive as the QB reverses the ball to him.
- 3Wing cuts back against the grain behind the pulling guard, not around.
Common mistakes to fix
- !Motion and mesh mistimed — rep the handoff exchange until the timing is clean.
- !Wing bounces outside instead of cutting back — teach him to follow the pulling guard inside.
