Every position's job

QB

Drop back to sell the pass, then throw the screen to the halfback slipping out left.

HB

Fake a block or route, then slip out to the left flat and catch behind the linemen.

FB

Block the near rusher to sell protection.

Playside Guard

Let the rusher through, then release to lead-block for the back.

Backside Guard

Set to sell protection, then help or release late.

Center

Set protection, then release to the screen convoy.

Playside Tackle

Let the rusher through, then release to lead-block for the back.

Backside Tackle

Set to sell the drop and protect the backside.

TE

Block briefly, then release or wall a defender.

Split End

Clear out vertically to pull coverage deep.

Flanker

Run off the corner to widen the coverage.

How to teach it

  • 1Guard and tackle intentionally let rushers through, then release to lead-block.
  • 2QB retreats to draw the rush before dumping the screen to the back.
  • 3Halfback delays, slips out, and catches on the move behind the convoy.

Common mistakes to fix

  • !Linemen block the rushers instead of releasing — teach them to invite and then leak out.
  • !Back leaks too early and tips the screen — teach a patient delay before slipping out.
