Every position's job

QB

Take the snap, hand to the wingback in jet motion going left, and boot away as a fake.

WB

In jet motion take the handoff going left, turn the corner, and read the perimeter blocks.

FB

Lead or fill; carry out the fake to hold the linebackers.

HB

Carry out a fake or cut off backside pursuit.

Playside Guard

Down-block the first inside defender playside.

Backside Guard

Pull left and lead up on the edge / first defender in the alley.

Center

Reach or scoop playside to seal the interior.

Playside Tackle

Down-block the first inside defender.

Backside Tackle

Scoop and protect the backside.

TE

Down-block inside to wall the edge.

Split End

Stalk-block the corner to clear the alley.

How to teach it

  • 1Line down-blocks playside; the backside guard pulls to lead up on the edge.
  • 2Get the wingback the ball at full speed with a clean, soft mesh.
  • 3Backside guard aims for the first threat in the alley, not the deepest defender.

Common mistakes to fix

  • !Backside guard over-pursues past the alley defender — teach him to block the first color he sees outside.
  • !Wing turns up too soon — press the edge and let the blocks develop.
