Trap 34
Halfback runs a quick-hitting inside trap through the four hole.
Concept: Backside guard pulls to trap the first defensive lineman past the block-down while the center and playside guard down-block.
Grows with your players
Same play, more layers as they age up — teach it once and build on it every season for a consistent program.
- 6UIntroduce: Nail the snap/exchange, aim the right hole, and finish downhill.
- 8UAdd the lead: Add the pulling guard(s) leading through the hole.
- 10UAdd the edge: Add the kickout block and run it to both sides.
- 12UAdd deception: Add the fake/mesh — and a counter off the very same look.
- 14UMaster it: Run it fast both directions and check into it by defensive look.
Every position's job
Take the snap, open and hand to the halfback quickly on the inside trap through the 4-hole.
Take the handoff and hit the 4-hole downhill, cutting off the trap block.
Fill or fake to hold the second-level defenders.
Down-block the first defender inside to help wall the hole.
Pull and trap the first defensive lineman past the down block, kicking him out.
Down-block/block back on the nose to seal the middle.
Down-block inside or climb to the linebacker.
Hinge or scoop to protect the backside.
Base or down-block at the point of attack.
Stalk the corner or run off the safety.
Arc or seal the edge defender.
How to teach it
- 1Center and playside guard down-block while the backside guard pulls and traps — quick-hitting.
- 2Halfback hits it downhill immediately; this is a fast trap, not a patient run.
- 3Trapping guard uses outside shoulder to log or kick the first lineman past the block-down.
Common mistakes to fix
- !Guard pulls too deep and is late to the trap — keep the pull flat and tight to the line.
- !Back is too slow and clogs the hole — emphasize a downhill, decisive first step.
