Wingback Reverse

Halfback starts a sweep then hands to the wingback coming the opposite way.

Concept: Backside must cut off pursuit while the wingback follows a pulling lineman around the far edge.

14UIntroduce: Nail the snap/exchange, aim the right hole, and finish downhill. Add the pulling guard(s) leading through the hole. Add pre-snap motion to stress the defense's edge. Add the fake/mesh — and a counter off the very same look. Run it fast both directions and check into it by defensive look.

Every position's job

QB

Hand to the halfback on the sweep, then carry out a fake to sell the initial flow.

HB

Start the sweep one way, then hand the ball to the wingback coming the opposite way.

WB

Come around opposite the sweep, take the handoff, and follow a pulling lineman around the far edge.

FB

Fake with the flow or fill to hold the linebackers.

Playside Guard

Block the initial sweep flow to sell the direction.

Backside Guard

Pull around to the reverse side to lead the wingback.

Center

Scoop or block back to seal the interior.

Playside Tackle

Block the sweep flow, then cut off pursuit.

Backside Tackle

Cut off backside pursuit chasing the reverse.

TE

Seal or crack the edge on the reverse side.

Split End

Stalk-block the corner on the reverse side.

How to teach it

  • 1Backside must cut off pursuit so chasers don't run down the reverse.
  • 2Wingback follows the pulling lineman around the far edge, not around him.
  • 3Sell the sweep hard first so the defense flows away from the reverse.

Common mistakes to fix

  • !Sweep fake is weak so the defense doesn't flow — sell the initial sweep with full speed.
  • !Reverse handoff exchange is fumbled — rep the give point until it's smooth.
